The following hiking gear is what I include in my hiking backpack for a day trip. You can use it as a starting point when packing your own; just remember that everyone’s needs will differ. For example, don’t forget any medications you may need, or bring appropriate clothing for the climate you’ll be hiking into.
The day hiking backpack: REI Flash 22In the backpack brain: The pack brain is where I tend to keep my additional clothing (possible) essentials. I’ll keep arm warmers/sun sleeves, mittens (depending on the time of year), a buff, and sun gloves.
In the outside pocket: This pocket is where I stash my snacks. I almost always carry more snacks than I think I’ll need (survival). I usually have a Vega bar, a Cliff bar, and some vegan jerky. I’ll also add some powdered electrolytes and lemonade to add to my water for an extra energy boost.
In my main compartment: In the biggest pocket, I keep my hiking journal, sunscreen, and a small first aid kit (bandaids, bug spray, and some Aleve). It’s here where I’ll also include my lunch, and maybe a spare jacket or vest-depending on the weather.
In the two side pockets: This is where I keep my sit pad! I rarely go without a sit pad, even if I don’t think I’ll want to sit down anywhere. It’s definitely a luxury item. On the other side, I’ll stash sunglasses (if I’m not wearing them), hand sanitizer (hello COVID times), and some random things like a park map, etc.
Honorable mentions: What’s the top piece of hiking gear I almost always take with me on a day hike? Well, there’s actually two: My trekking poles and my Kula Cloth. If I ever do leave home without either of these essentials, I tend to be grumpy about it.
What hiking gear do you take with you on a day hike?
*Disclaimer: I am not getting paid for anything mentioned or linked in this post. I bought all my own gear.
